2005 Mid-South Report

2005 Mid-South Report

LASS Crew at 2005 Mid-South

Another Mid-South Soaring Contest has come and gone! This year it was held by the North Atlanta Soaring Association (NASA) and was three days of soaring – handlaunch, RES and Unlimited.

Gordy, Tony and Ed headed down-south as the LASS contingent. Friday was handlaunch and RES, Saturday and Sunday were both unlimited thermal duration. In the end, Ed ended up in 12th out of 26 in RES and had a 12th and 7th place finish in unlimited. Gordy got wood with 4th and 2nd place finishes on Saturday and Sunday!

Check out the 2005 Mid-South Gallery. Thanks to Tony for the photos! “Read more” for Gordy’s accounts from all three days…

June 17, 2005

As a reminder the Thursday evening flying sessions have been going on for two weeks now. The weather has not been the best (windy last night) but we have been having a good time. This will continue every Thursday till the end of September. Right now we have daylight till 9:00 so come on out. For those working on LSF task the calmer evening air is a good time to make landings or work on other skills.

We also picked up where we left off last year by going to the Mexican restaurant in J-town after flying for a group dinner and some hanger flying.

Now after saying what I did above I must say next week we will NOT meet on Thursday ( June 23) evening. For that matter we will not be at the field on the following Sunday either. This next week is the Mid-South competition in Atlanta. Gordy, Tony, Ron and myself will be flying with the southern boy’s next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. There is no one left to get the winch to the field on these days. This coming Sunday we plan on being at the field by 11:00 am.

We have new club t-shirts. Light grey (NOT ORANGE!) in color as Ben keeps reminding me. The logo is more in line with what is on the web site in the upper corner of the screen. Shirts are $12 each. I am also looking to take orders for a white shirt with a collar in the design style of golf shirts. If we can get a dozen commitments we can order this shirt. Several members have expressed a desire for a more “classy” shirt for contest flying than a t-shirt. If you are interested let me know so I can add you to the list. Price would be about $25 each.

Home from a REAL soaring contest (IHLGF 2005)

Home from a REAL soaring contest (IHLGF 2005)

I just got home from another excellent soaring adventure kicked off at the IHLGF. It was 6 days of soaring with friends in SoCal, what a blast. The long version follows…

Things got started for me on Thursday morning. I carried on JR 8103 radios in my case and a backpack over the shoulder, also checked a sportube full of XP-4’s and a bag with no trouble, harassment or extra fees, I flew Northwest. I met my flying buddy, Ken Marks in San Diego and after a quick stop at the
FedEx to pick up a sport tube full of slopers we headed to the flying field.

Int’l Handlaunch Glider Festival 2005

Int’l Handlaunch Glider Festival 2005

IHLGF 2005 Winners

LASS club members Bruce Davidson and Ken Marks made their way out to Poway, California last week to the Torrey Pines Gulls 2005 Int’l Handlaunch Glider Festival. Something like 90 pilots from many different countries attended the three-day event. Friday there was a discus-launch “clinic”, with our own Bruce Davidson heading up one of the topic (I believe it was “What to carry in your field box”). Saturday and Sunday consisted of the best-of-the-best in handlaunch battling it out in the heat and winds that Poway is known for.

In the end, East-coaster Phil Barnes won the contest over 2nd-place Paul Anderson and 3rd-place Joe Wurts. Bruce ended up in 5th place, edging out Mark Drela and Adam “Red” Weston for 6th and 7th.

Images and results are just now starting to trickle in. Expect more photos and reports soon!
In the meantime, check out these RCGroups threads: Poway International Hand launch Glider Festival, Poway Results

Ken and Bruce are staying out in Cali for a little while longer, hoping to catch some mean dynamic soaring (DS) action at Parker Mountain. What a blast!
